should I return my tap shoes for a smaller size?

I went to the dance shop to get some tap shoes for my tap class and I had to wear a thin pantyhose sock instead of my regular sock b/c the fibers would stick to the inside of the shoe.
so when I came home, I tried on the shoe and now it’s too tight b/c the sock is too thick.
should I just get a thin pair of socks with good padding or return my shoes?
It’s a long way back to the shop from where I live.

The shoes are leather but they are very tight on the sides..so much so that when I take them off,the sides of my foot hurt.
if i do save them, should I get well padded socks or dress socks?

Dance shoes are generally worn with very thin sock.

Dance shoes supposed to fit tight, but they’re not supposed to hurt your feet. You might need a wider fitting. Try different brand or ask to exchange for same size but marked W.

Yes it is possible to stretch the shoes in the width. You can take them to shoe repair shop and ask them to do it for you. I’d stll recommend exchanging your shoes because you don’t know if the stretching will work well or will it stretch too much.
