What can I do when I am in Bruges (in Belgium) for the day?
I am visiting one of Europe’s most beautiful & best preserved medieval cities, which is (apparently) easy to explore on foot, by horse drawn-carriage or canal boat; however, this is for one day only as I am visiting via Eurotunnel. Could anyone provide me tourist information (including a useful website with, if possible, a map) with the different things that I could visit? Museums, sights and anything else which is achievable by foot within a short period of time; plus, anything else which is a must to see (Nevertheless, I am looking forward checking out the tempting Belgian chocolates, beautiful handmade lace & mouth watering beers). Too much too mention. Start with taking a bus to ‘De Markt’ if you arrive at the station because it is a fair walk to town. Alternatively if you can get hold of a map you could walk the scenic route into town.
You could try Memling museum, Gruthuuse (not sure if it’s spelled right), Minnewater, climb to the top of the Halletoren (366 steps on a spiral staircase), St Salvatorskerk should you like churches and Astridpark where few tourists venture but is is 5 minutes walk from ‘De Vismarkt’ (which is 5 minutes walk from the Halletoren.)
Avoid the tourist traps of lace and chocolate unless the chocolate is Leonidas. They are not cheap but the best. There is Leonidas in Steenstraat and another in Katelijnestraat.
What else is there to say … Oh, there is an annual ‘snow culture’ exhibition on the station square that start on 23rd November and runs till early january. I’d recommend it.
