Basic Quilting Techniques
Quilting is a methof of sewing material together to make a thicker padded material usually using three layers. Quilting has been done for bed coverings, wall art, and clothing. Quilting can raise one area of the material so that it stands out over another. Quilting can be done by hand, by sewing machine, or by a spacialist longarm quilting system. It is believed that quilting started for its utility; the padded fabric was used for protection and warmth. There are Egyptian sculptures which show figures weating clothing which was quilted; probably to fight off the chilly desert evenings.
A quilter is the name given to someone who works at quilting. Quilting is usually done with three layers, the quilt top, batting and backing material. “Paper” quilting was used during American pioneer days. Machine quilting and hand quilting are the two most widely used methods. Hand Quilting is the process of using a needle and thread to sew a running stitch by hand across the entire area to be quilted. A quilting frame or hoop is often used to assist in holding the piece being quilted off the quilter’s lap. The Amish in the United States are known for their hand quilting practices. With the home sewing machine the layers are often tacked together before quilting. Quilters can use threads that contrast the fabric to emphasize the design patterns of the quilt.
Sewing the three quilt layers together, using stitches in decorative patterns, called motifs, or in utilitarian patterns, such as straight lines, using bigger stitches. Stitching through three layers, usually by hand has three purposes; 1) to hold the three layers together, 2) to create the design of the quilt, and 3) to trap air which will make the quilt much warmer. Quilting is usually completed by starting from the middle, and moving outward toward the edges of the quilt. Quilting has grown into an art form using decorative stitches. Embroidery, applique and other forms of needlework are often combined with quilting.
Quilting is a 6 step process: 1 select the fabric, 2 cut the fabric, 3 sewing the fabric together in a pattern, 4 layering the three pieces together, 5 sewing thru the layers of the quilt, 6 sew the binding to the edges of the quillt.
Fat quarters always make excellent quilting gifts, and it’s easy to dress them up a bit by folding them into triangles, and then bundling them to create stacked stars.
