Why are the Canadian icehockey team called Maple leafs when it should be Maple Leaves ?

The Maple Leafs are a unique case in that their name is meant to signify the maple leaf on the Canadian flag. There’s but one leaf on the flag – not leaves, hence the name Maple “Leafs” instead of Maple Leaves.
