What additional ice skating classes to take?
My daughter is currently in a Delta level class and wants to take additional classes provided at her rink. They have such classes as Stroking Endurance, Stroking Techniques, Beginning Spin, Skater’s Workshop, etc. At her level, is it feasible to take these additional classes on top of her private lessons? Or should I wait until she’s in a higher level? If so, what level should she take the spin, spiral, and jump classes, etc?
At her level, I would advise to choose one of those classes to take, along with private lessons and group lessons. She shouldn’t need to go to practice ice yet.
Right now, the stroking classes are heavily advisable. When she takes her Preliminary Freestyle test, they aren’t busy looking for technicalities, they’re looking at how refined her skating is. And stroking is going to help that.
Spiral classes, for my students, start the minute they pass Freestyle 1. Until then, have your daughter practice them at home by holding on to a bed frame, the back of a chair, or a similar spot and seeing how high she can comfortably lift her leg into the air.
You should start her off in spins and jumps when she gets into Freestyle 3, because Freestyle 4 is where it gets hard. Skating Workshop is also something I encourage my students to do, technique is a BIG part of Freestyle 5.
Overall, practice makes perfect and your daughter needs the ice time.
