how do i dye a satin wedding dress to eggplant purple?
i am altering a wedding dress to wear as a bridesmaid dress but i need to dye it eggplant (deep) purple can this be done if so can i use rit dye also should this be done before altered or after
Can it be done at all? It depends on what the satin is made of. Silk satin is easy to dye, but if your dress was made of silk, you’d probably have said so. Polyester satin is very difficult to dye.
You cannot dye polyester satin with Rit dye. The dye has no affinity for the fiber and will just rinse out. You can dye polyester only with a special polyester dye called disperse dye, which you cannot buy in your local stores. You will have to buy this dye by mail-order from a dye supplier such as PRO Chemical & Dye, in Massachusetts.
Is your dress washable? you can’t dye anything that is not washable. Dyeing involves a lot of washing. You have to boil the fabric in the dye, and then you have to wash it several times to remove excess dye. If your dress is dry-clean-only, you won’t be able to dye it without destroying it.
Can you get someone to dye your dress professionally? Probably not. Again the answer depends on the fiber content. Professional garment dyers will be very happy to redye your dress if it’s made of silk, but no reputable dyer wants to mess with dyeing a 100% polyester dress.
